Why APIs are the primary target for modern data breaches
Modern web and mobile applications rely heavily on APIs to fetch and mutate customer records. Because APIs expose direct programmatic database interfaces, traditional network firewalls cannot detect unauthorized data requests.
The most pervasive API vulnerability is Broken Object-Level Authorization (BOLA/IDOR), where changing an ID parameter in an API request allows an authenticated user to view or modify another customer's private data. We test every endpoint across multiple privilege tiers to verify that authorization is rigorously enforced on the server for every single call.
OWASP API Security Top 10 coverage
- API1: Broken Object Level Authorization (BOLA) — Testing whether User A can manipulate resource identifiers to read or overwrite User B's records.
- API2: Broken Authentication — Flaws in token generation, missing expiration, JWT signature verification bypass, and weak password reset logic.
- API3: Broken Object Property Level Authorization — Excessive data exposure in JSON responses and mass assignment vulnerabilities on POST/PATCH requests.
- API4: Unrestricted Resource Consumption — Missing rate limits, unconstrained pagination, and regex-based denial of service.
- API5: Broken Function Level Authorization — Verifying whether regular user tokens can invoke administrative endpoints.
